What can we learn about teaching and learning from these teachers?

The Rickety Old house of creativityFrom Brian Cosbys' video "Back To The Future", there is so much to be learned about how you can help students, especially at risk students. Brian Cosby attempts to infuse Project Based Learning into his classroom. He is really trying to get the most production and participation as possible out of his kids. To achieve this he creates varying projects for his students. He allows them to crush cans, burn tissue paper and send balloons up into the atmosphere. He has learned that in order to get the students attention and to truly help them learn you must incorporate things that the students find interesting. There isn't a student anywhere that is going to sit and listen to a teacher talk and then truly grasp the concept of the lesson. It is important to be as hands on as we can, so we can really influence our students and change their lives.

The next video is about the "Blended Learning Cycle". Paul Anderson , the creator of this video says, that basically to create a blended learning cycle you have to infuse Online, Classroom and Mobile learning into one. Mr. Anderson has his own special acronym for a blended learning cycle that he uses in his classroom QUIVERS:

Qu-Question
I-Investigating
V-Video
E-Elaboration
R-Review
S-Summary

To become a Digital Super Citizen means to be safe and knowledgeable about what you search and where you go on the Internet. The teacher in this video goes into great depth about the importance on being safe while online. He has the kids create scenarios in which they have to come to the rescue and save themselves. It is a very good technique and a great way to show kids the importance of using the Internet safely.

In Roosevelt Elementary PBL Program, they begin with explaining what PBL is. Project Based Learning is:

  • In Depth Learning
  • Integrated Thematic Instruction
  • Based on a "Real-World" Problem
  • Research-Based
  • Project and Presentation
At Roosevelt Elementary, PBL is mainly used to try to incorporate a real world problem solving skills in with the classroom. That way teachers aren't only teaching what the curriculum says, they are also giving these students valuable life lessons that they will need to learn eventually. The teachers collaborate to find out how they can bind the projects with the curriculum and ensure that the students will really understand the concept. The children are taught how to do a project form beginning to end and also it teaches them how to speak publicly at a very young age which is very important. At Roosevelt the teachers believe that the students should have more responsibility and they should be given more adult like tasks.

  2. Hey Anthony!

I learned a lot from the videos as well. I enjoyed Brian Crosby's video. Especially the project where the students sent a balloon into space! I agree that, as teachers, we must be hands on as much as we can. I believe that, most of the time, students learn when they are having fun. Another idea that I liked was Paul Anderson's Idea of Q.U.I.V.E.R.S. I liked the fact that he made sure that his students understood the lesson before he allow them to be quizzed or tested.

    Great post!
